Bicycle commuting saves both time AND gas We all know that bicycling saves gas, but did you know that if you live in a congested urban area, it can save time as well?

Transportation Alternatives, the New York City bicycle advocacy group, recently conducted its annual commuter race, and on the route from Brooklyn to Manhattan, the cyclist beat both the automobile and the subway.

I was active in TA back in the '80s when I lived in NYC. I wrote articles for their newsletter, The City Cyclist, and served as a facilitator for one of their conferences on making the city more bicycle-friendly.

Before that, when I was working as a reporter at the Record-Journal in Meriden, Conn., I wrote a weekly bicycling column, "Biker's Byline." For one column, I conducted a commuter race of my own. I raced several of my co-workers from their homes to the office on my bike as they either drove or took the bus. Needless to say, I beat the bus handily. And even in a relatively small city of 55,000 people, I either beat or tied the people who lived within the city limits. The only ones who beat me were those who lived in the burbs.

So give bicycle commuting a second look. You may find it's not that time-consuming after all!

Here's a link to a news story about the TA contest:

JimB The greatest place to do that is Vermont. Back in the 80s I did three tours with Vermont Bicycle Tours (dont know if theyre still in existence). You bike from one country inn to another. They carry your luggage for you. You usually have your choice of three routes between inns each day, ranging from 25 miles on the flattest routes to as many as 75 with some climbs. One one ride, we actually had the option of doing a century ride around the Northeast Kingdom, which actually crossed the Canadian border at one point.

kettlebell27 I just had a hard time getting to it, too. I'm not sure if he's added it to the list underneath the 'articles by author' listing yet. I can send you or anyone else a copy of it if you send me an email.

JimB Maybe the rising cost of gas will have its bright side: People will be walking and biking more, and the rate of obesity will start going down! Not to mention less greenhouse gas going into the atmosphere.

JimB I was looking for your article on standapartfitness.com. Was it in one of the newsletters?

ozipherus Biking and rollerblading can both save so much time, and yes, saving gas it essential for economic and ecological reasons. Montreal is congested enough, I take advantage of any non-car related mode of traqnsportation. Great post!

JimB I've been taking the train to work for the past few years, and I had calculated that when gas reached $2.65 per gallon I'd be making up the cost of my monthly commuter ticket in gas alone, let alone tolls and other wear and tear on the car. (I have a Subaru Forester, which is considerably easier on gas than a big SUV.) And I get the exercise benefit from walking between my home and office and the stations. And I'm using my bike as much as I can for local errands when I don't have to schlepp a lot of stuff.
I'd like to read your article.

kettlebell27 I just recently wrote an article on this for standapartfitness.com, showing how now is one of the greatest times to save some money due to high gas costs. If an SUV gets 10 mpg, that's 40 cents a mile you're dishing out...The cost per mile on a bike is ridiculously low: its measured in calories you burn, not in gallons of gas! Since I started walking to work & biking to work, I have hardly put on 2000 miles on my car in over 7 months of being where I am.
