Let's get Britney, Tatum and Amy into the gym! As if we need another reason to work out, researchers have now discovered that exercise can prevent substance abuse.

Those of us who have experienced that runner's high after an intense workout know that it beats any kick from drugs or alcohol.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse has discovered that teenagers who exercise regularly are far less likely to smoke or use drugs than those who don't exercise. But then, anyone who smokes isn't going to last long in the gym or on the athletic field.

ozipherus Thats funny cause its true... I never thought of that...lol... I prefer fresh air in my face when I ride, run, rollerblade, or any other time for that matter.

JimB What really gets me is seeing somebody smoking while riding a bicycle! Not only does it counteract the health benefits of cycling, how the hell do they keep it lit while riding???

runningbear LOL!

JimB It's probably not a coincidence that that gym is out of business now!

ozipherus My gym has the gang that try so hard to run on the treadmill and then go for a cigarette break before coming back to lift weights... makes me laughin a sad way.

runningbear You'd think there would be some kind of a questionnaire and a hiring policy that prohibits at least public displays of behavior that badly reflect on the establishment.

JimB Fortunately I never had a substance abuse problem, unless you count my former addiction to an antidepressant. Fortunately the endorphins from working out enabled me to wean myself off it. So now I'm literally addicted to exercise, which is just fine with me!

JimB At one of my former gyms, I used to have to run a gamut of secretaries and other office workers smoking outside the door. I often wondered why they would work for a place whose values were so diametrically opposed to theirs.

runningbear I catch myself rolling my eyes when I seem someone smoking in the gym parking lot, but then I guess at least they're at the gym and working out, doing SOMETHING healthy....
runningbear on 6/10/2008 Respond

ozipherus This is very true. Since working out and eating well, I have not had a single desire to indulge in my former bad habits. You also never see heroin addicts in the gym, but many people who are avid gym goers, are former addicts to one substance or another.
Great post and thank you for the link!

jillybean I can see the correlation in this. I think generally when you care about your body and you put your own time and effort into working out, you don't want to damage it by other methods.
