The Walking School Bus

Last week ABC news aired a feature about the Walking School bus program in Somerville, New Jersey. Yes, right here in the "What Exit?" state kids have been walking to school for the last four years!
The Somerville Board of Education eliminated busing to Van Derveer elementary school in 2004, and since then the school and parents have joined in organizing the "Walking School Bus," in which the kids walk to school in groups along specified routes, picking up classmates along the way. Not only is this saving fuel, but the kids are getting some exercise as well! And kids are even picking up litter along the way!
Several other communities have been adopting the Walking School bus program, and last Wednesday was National Walk to School Day, in which many school districts participated.
Bravo to school administrators for promoting this program!
