Diet is a four letter word

Over the 15 years or so that I battled my weight problem, I joined Weight Watchers no fewer than four times.

To be sure, each time I lost weight. But each time I gained it all back again, and then some.

Weight Watchers' basic premise is sound. They teach you a lot about healthy eating. Problem is, if you only reduce your food intake, your body thinks its starving, and your metabolism slows down. Since your body makes more efficient use of what you do eat, it becomes harder to lose weight. You defeat your own purpose.

As "Biggest Loser" contestant Jenn Widder told me in our recent interview, "The word 'diet' makes me cringe."

More than once as I sat in the WW meetings listening to some banshee speaker spout off, I thought to myself, my time would be better spent in the gym.
