Working out with the Olympians
olympics, swimming, elliptical, treadmill, stationary bike

As a onetime competitive swimmer, I'm really excited about Michael Phelps' accomplishments at the Olympics. I've been rooting for him as he shatters one record after another.
When I was at the gym Monday night, I was watching the Olympics on TV as I was working out on the elliptical machine. Among the events I got to watch during my workout was the men's 200-yard freestyle, in which Phelps captured one of his many gold medals. On the elliptical, you can work both your arms and legs, and the movements closely resemble those of the crawl stroke in an upright position. So, as I watched the race, I tried to keep up with Michael's stroke (Yeah, dream on!) I almost felt as if I was swimming along with him!
It occurred to me that you could use the Olympic broadcasts to pace yourself on other exercise machines as well. Why not run on the treadmill while watching the running events? Ride the stationary bike while watching the bike races? Who needs Wii Fit!
The Bergen Record ran a cartoon today that poked fun at "Olympic couch potatoes" who watch the games while vegging out on the couch and consuming junk food. As I discovered, there are ways to enjoy the Olympics and still get some exercise in the process!
