Not Sure if you're a Binge Eater? Find out

Not Sure if you're a Binge Eater? Find out Most of us overeat from time to time, and many people feel they frequently eat more than they should. Eating large amounts of food, however, does not mean that a person has binge eating disorder. Doctors are still debating the best ways to determine if someone has binge eating disorder. But most people with serious binge eating problems have:

- Frequent episodes of eating what others would consider an abnormally large amount of food.

- Frequent feelings of being unable to control what or how much is being eaten.

- Several of these behaviors or feelings:
1. Eating much more rapidly than usual.
2. Eating until uncomfortably full.
3. Eating large amounts of food, even when not physically hungry.
4. Eating alone out of embarrassment at the quantity of food being eaten.
5. Feelings of disgust, depression, or guilt after overeating.

Episodes of binge eating also occur in the eating disorder bulimia nervosa. Persons with bulimia, however, regularly purge, fast, or engage in strenuous exercise after an episode of binge eating. Purging means vomiting or using diuretics (water pills) or laxatives in greater-than-recommended doses to avoid gaining weight. Fasting is not eating for at least 24 hours. Strenuous exercise, in this case, is defined as exercising for more than an hour solely to avoid gaining weight after binge eating. Purging, fasting, and strenuous exercise are dangerous ways to attempt weight control.

Thinking about Using an Herbal Diet? Here's what you should know
Tags: herbal diets, dieting, caffeine, teas, diet tea

Thinking about Using an Herbal Diet? Here's what you should know Most herbal diet teas fall into one of two categories. The first type contains stimulants that supposedly cause us to burn fat faster, though scientific studies have not yet proven this claim. Since they are stimulants, they may also work as appetite suppressants, these teas also carry the risks of other appetite suppressants, including nervousness, headaches and sleeplessness. Examples of stimulant ingredients include ephedra, ephedrine, ma huang, kola nut, and guarana.

The other major type of "diet tea" produces weight loss by acting as a laxative or diuretic to promote the loss of large amounts of body fluid. Unlike fiber-based "bulk" laxatives, these stimulant laxatives become habit-forming by causing intestinal muscle to lose the ability to function without them. By causing excess water loss, they can also lower levels of important minerals like potassium, which can cause serious health problems. Some of the most common of these stimulant laxatives are senna, locust plant, angustofolia, cassia angustofolia, cascara and buckthorn. These same ingredients can also be found in herbal "cleansing" or "purifying" products. Experts warn that the use of such products is hazardous.

Ketogenic Diets, A Blast from the Past
Tags: dieting, ketogenic diets

Ketogenic Diets, A Blast from the Past KD’s were used by the old-timers because they knew it was the best way to maintain lean muscle mass while shedding fat at the fastest rate possible. This article will give you a description of the diet itself; later articles will describe the variations. The basic idea of a KD is to induce a ketogenic state. Reducing your carbs to below roughly 30 grams a day does this.

This reduces the your blood glucose levels and insulin levels. In turn your glucagon levels increase which will cause an increase in the number of ketone bodies in the blood. Ketone bodies (KB’s) are the product of fat metabolism. Once KB’s are at sufficient levels i.e. higher than glucose levels, they become the preferred choice of fuel for the body. (yes, contrary to what you might have heard the brain will use KB’s as fuel). Once this happens you are officially in ketosis.

So basically eat less than 30 grams of carbs a day and after a couple of hard training sessions you will be in ketosis and well on your way to dropping those pounds…or stones!! The main components of this diet are protein and fat. ...

Break out of a Weight Loss Plateau

Break out of a Weight Loss Plateau What is a weight loss plateau?

You are on a diet, but you reach a period of time (two or more weeks) where you can't seem to lose any weight. Your weight may actually fluctuate 3lbs up or down, but you can't seem to break below this range.

You can experience a weight loss plateau for different reasons:

1. You are consuming too many calories for the amount of calories that you are burning off. 2. You are not consuming enough calories; your body defends itself by slowing down your metabolism.

First, you need to determine if you are experiencing a plateau or if your weight is in a state of normal fluctuation. Weigh yourself once per week. If you have not lost any weight after 3 weeks, you've hit a plateau. Remember, people lose weight at different rates. If you've lost even one pound after three weeks, you are still losing weight and probably don't need to change anything. The closer you get to your goal weight, the harder it will be to lose weight.

Second, if you are experiencing a plateau, look at your current diet and exercise patterns. The NutriCounter can function as a measurement tool to see how many calories you are consuming each day. (http://www.nutricounter.com) It will also help you determine if you are eating the appropriate amount of carbohydrates and protein each day. You should also keep an exercise journal that will help you determine how much exercise you are getting each day.

Here are some patterns that you may need to break. (Note: before trying any of the methods below, get your doctor's advice. This is especially important if you have special dieting needs.)

1. You should be eating at least 1200 calories a day if you are a woman and 1500 calories per day if you are a man. If you restrict your calories too much your body will start stockpiling fat because it thinks you are starving.

2. You may try to break a plateau by decreasing the percentage of...
