Overweight Kids Imitate What They See In Adults

THIS IS REALLY A DISBURBING THOUGHT--KIDS SEEM TO THINK ITS NORMAL AND OKAY TO BE OVERWEIGHT! THERE IS LESS AND LESS PEER PRESSURE TO STAY FIT AND LOOK YOUR BEST!

That's right adults! When it comes to fat loss and weight loss, kids are doing what they see in adults. "Do as I say and not as I do" doesn't work! Let's face it---there has been a weight problem in this country for a while. There are many reasons for this like sedentary lifestyles (less walking, sit down jubs, sitting at the computer for hours at home, less outdoor activities), over-eating and less regular exercise.

I was sitting in a meeting some months ago and the speaker said something that caught everyone's attention. He basically said that for the first time since medical statistics have been kept on life expectancy in the United States, life expectancy will go down starting with this generation. That generation is my kid's and your kid's generation. The reason? Obesity. Obesity and the diseases it causes is now the number one preventable condition that causes death in this country.

I don't see very many kids playing "street ball", playing yard games, on playgrounds, at swimming pools, etc. That's what I want to see more of from kids. I don't see enough adults doing these things either. That kind of physical activity is not forced but is usually the result of their imagination. It makes burning calories fun for kids! It has been proven that we are more likely to continue activities that are enjoyable.

Let's all do our part to change this trend! The obesity problem in this country didn't happen overnight and things won't change overnight.

I train several overweight teens. I am furious at the parent's denial of the seriousness of the problem.
I had a mother recently tell me her very overweight kid "ran cross country" in school. When I asked the kid, his face grew confused. "I jogged once around the track. My mother doesn't know what she's talking about." Chances are anyone reading this on Fitconnect has the correct outlook on this, so it's up to ALL of us to spread the word.

MyFitnessHut You and your girls probably have more influence than you think......personal trainers also need to promote health more often and not things like "6-pack abs" as much. That's not popular, but I'll stick to that belief.....

runningbear I SO agree. They're much more inclined to imitate our behaviors than they are to listen to our words - especially if our actions don't back them up!!

crista Sadly not as many people are as passionate about fitness as us few that are on this site. If you go to facebok or myspace and see the enormous amount of people on their sites as compared to a site like this. It shows what society is mostly passionate about, seeing who is more popular. Fitness is surely not the main topic of discussion on those sites. Mark nice post, I am sure your kids love to workout and I am sure they don't even find it as a chore. My girls do whatever I do, they know most kickboxing moves and sadly my 6yr old can do yoga poses better then mom.

MyFitnessHut Exactly RB! We as adults can't expect kids to reverse the trend until we do it ourselves!

MyFitnessHut Agreed Ozi! Let's all do our part!

n8ball I workout a lot at home, and my children imitate me a lot. They also eat what I eat, and I take them grocery shopping and they help me pick out the best foods for us. Educating our children is all about modeling good behavior, whether it is emotional wholeness or nutrition and exercise. They need to see us DO it!

runningbear Kids need positive role models - and support and encouragement to stay active. If the parent isn't around to monitor the number of hours spent in front of the tv and on the playstation, to control how much junk food is being consumed, and to encourage the kids to get moving, the end result is the epidemic of childhood obesity we are now faced with!

OzzieOcean It is a sad fact, and I have written about it inthe past. I will be writting more about it too. We as parents and trainers, or even just as friends need to encourage kids to eat well, be active and stay fit. It should be our main duty and #1 priority. Your blog is very well stated!
