I have an old friend, (he’s 94) who’s always saying to me,
“Why ya gotta go and start a ruckus.”
When he reads this, I’m sure to get a phone call from him.
Yesterday I met with a perspective personal training client. He’s a major player on Wall Street, in charge of moving around billions of dollars each day. If you watch the business channels, you’ve seen him on as a guest. He’s a gazillionaire. He’s also seriously overweight. And I told him so. That started the ruckus.
“Young man, (He’s only four years older than me but he looks 80), let’s get something straight. No one talks to me that way. Do you understand? I can make you and I can also break you.
(I thought for sure I was in some sort of Wall Street-twilight zone, being worked over by an obese Gordon Gekko)
I told him that if he wants to lose weight and save his life and see his son graduate high school, he needed to exercise one hour a day, six days a week. No excuses.
“Do you know how busy I am?” He asked.
I told him there are hundreds of trainers in this city who will gladly take his money and stand by as he fails to show up session after session. I wished him well and said goodbye.
He told me to go to f**kin’ hell.
I felt bad for the guy. Millions of dollars, a Ferrari he showed me a photo of that he can’t fit in. Homes on Fifth Avenue, Palm Beach and The Hamptons. And he’s so overweight he can barely walk from his limo into a building without panting and sweating.
Oh yeah, I got a call this morning at 6:15 am when I was on my way to meet a client for a workout.
“Ray, this *******, can we meet up next week for a trial session?”
