The 9/11 Effect on Fat Loss
Tags: 9/11, fat loss, prevention

The 9/11 Effect on Fat Loss In the United States, today is the 7th anniversary of the worst attack on U.S. soil in history. There was a collective wonderment as thoughts of confusion and “how could this happen” reigned through the minds of all of us.

Prior to that day, if you asked most people they would say “that could never happen”, “not here” and “not in MY backyard”. Well it did. Then, shortly after, planning began on how to prevent this from every happening again. Thankfully it has not happened again. I pray it never does.

This story is so familiar in our individual lives when it comes to our health. No one thinks a health challenge will invade their lives or the life of someone they love – until it does. When that challenge is dealt with and hopefully eradicated…many people will change gears, adopt a healthier lifestyle and fight to not let it happen again.

In both cases there can be debate about prevention.

Could we have prevented the events of September 11, 2001? Can health challenges be prevented by exercising regularly and eat well? Arguments can be made on both sides and if you have read any of my other articles or posts – I bet you know what side I am on.

Science, statistics, anecdotal evidence and 1st hand experience aside, is it not reasonable to ere on the side of caution? Would you not want to “stack the cards in your favor”? I say yes.

Fat is not healthy. Not exercising and eating poorly increases one’s risk of disease and death.

Don’t wait to be reactive but be proactive. If you lead a healthy lifestyle – reach out to your friends and neighbors the same way millions of people all over the world did on 9/11…help. Walk with someone. Share healthy recipes. Refer your trainer or gym. The only way we can combat the epidemic of obesity is to fight it together.

I have written about taking action before and today reminds us all that action instead of inaction can save lives.

Thank you, thank you...THANK YOU!
Tags: heart attack, motivation, prevention

The feedback from my last post and email regarding my dad and his heart attack was nothing short of
overwhelming. The most effective way to answer all of the comments and questions, I feel, is to post
one more time as a follow up.

But first thing is first.

Thank you God for sparing my dad from death…once again!

Thank you to the outstanding and skillful doctors who fixed the problem and the nursing staff who
took unbelievable care of him.

Thank you to my friends on FitConnect, Facebook and my subcribers for your thoughts, comments
and prayers. From the United States to Scotland, Australia and inbetween I am humbled, amazed and so
blessed to have relayed all of your words of encouragement to my dad. I read to him from my blackberry
every one I could and it lifted him…big time.

What happened?

My dad arrived at the local hospital on Thursday “just not feeling right”. He also had just a bit of
back pain in between his shoulder blades. When the EKG reading came out - BAM! Major cardiac event and
the team from Medflight was rushing him to Boston Medical Center.

One of the six stents, placed three in each of two arteries 28 months ago, had clogged enough to induce a
second heart attack. This was due to stopping a medication called plavix which helps prevent such an
occurence.

The doctors fixed the problem and placed a 7th stent in the affected area to help
prevent further issues.

Today, 4 days later, I drove my dad home from the hospital. The extent of the damage to his heart was
significant. Time will tell how much tissue died and how much will come back.

The lesson here is two fold in terms of science, fitness and application.

1.) A person can show virtually no symptoms and be in deep trouble.

2.) Without eating well and maintaining a fitness regim...

This post will save a life
Tags: consistency, human behavior, stress, heart attack, prevention

This post will save a life Why?

Because it is that important.

Because I care.

I’m a bit emotional right now so hopefully this post will be coherent.

Yesterday my dad had his second heart attack in two years. Why do you need to know this?
Because he has no family history of heart disease. His mom and dad lived into their 70’s and 80’s.
My dad’s two brothers do not have heart disease as determined by extensive testing.
He has cholesterol levels well within the normal range. He has Normal (actually great)
blood pressure. Virtually NO risk factors.

The first heart attack in the spring of 2006 was as a direct result of heart disease - most likely stress
induced.

Yesterday’s event was caused by the 10% chance that any of the six stints, 3 two different coronary arteries,
would narrow.

What I haven’t mentioned is that he has always been active. In fact after his first event he
my dad stepped it up even more and has been eating close to perfect and exercising more regularly than
ever before.

The silver lining in all of this is that all of the doctors concur - IF it weren’t for the physical
condition my father is in he would have not survived either event.

We still don’t know the extent of the damage done to his heart at this point. What the doctors do
know is that he is stable and was able to avoid open heart surgery for a bypass of the artery. We
do know that it looks like, God willing, he will recover and live a long and fruitful life.

Why do I feel compelled to share this on my blog, social networks and to my entire subscriber list all
over the World?

If just one person takes action and begins a consistent exercise program and regularly eats well - it will either
prevent something like this happening to them OR they will survive it if it does happen.

I praise God my d...

Is Stress Killing You? Get high...

Is Stress Killing You? Get high... ...on exercise of course!

Bummer huh? Did you really think an exercise nut like me would write about the virtues of getting high? Maybe the legalization of marijuana? Another time, another day.

If you would like to get legally stoned then you want to read the rest of this blog post.

First I need to remind you, if you did not only know, what the #1 killer in the U.S. currently is. It is STRESS.

STRESS is linked to every major disease know to man...especially those of cancer and heart disease. Stress also:

Negatively impacts your immune system
Destroys your state of mind
Makes you gain weight (Now I have your attention)
Makes it more difficult to recover from your workouts
Exercise turns the page on stress and done right it will do so while you are legally stoned as my friend and Carlos Santana puts it.

Ever heard of a runners high?

There is more science backing up what many fitness professionals already know. The following is a run down from a presentation by Carlos I was lucky enough to listen in on in Providence R.I. last weekend.

"A study in 2004 by Georgia Tech University found that runner's high might be caused by the release of another naturally produced chemical, the endocannabinoid anandamide."

Anandamide is similar to the active chemical THC. Yes the same THC found in marijuana.

The greatest news is you don't have to run a marathon to get it!

My 10 minute workouts are designed get you to the same level of out put in less time. It's all about intensity and consistency!

Get high. Lose weight. No stress. Win.

Tim Russert Dies at 58
Tags: fitness, prevention, live longer, tim russert

I was not going to write about this as it is so fresh, so unbelievable and so hard to take for many, many people.

But is it too important.

IF you don’t know who Tim Russert is and what he did…view this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4C4liF8Eu0

No matter what side of the political aisle you may sit on there is no doubt you trusted and respected the journalism and professionalism Tim Russert brought to the table. He was, in my opinion and in the opinion of millions of others…the best.

Fitness sometimes gets a bad rap. It’s usually marketed as something superficial (you know, the
six pack abs, flat tummy, etc.). The fitness industry is filled with fads, gimmicks and infomercials
with absolute crap.

But fitness is MORE than that.

Preventing disease.

Having more energy.

Living a longer life.

Feeling good.

Quality of life

Unfortunately, PREVENTION doesn’t sell.

As I learned of the news today while listening to FM talk radio in Boston, I marveled at the show’s host as he could barely speak because he was so upset at the loss of a colleague and aquiantance as well as being reminded of his own mortality.

Would Tim Russert have lived longer if he exercised regulary and ate well? Who can really say?

I am willing to be his wife and son, who just graduated from college, wish they could find out.

I pray for Tim’s family and friends.
