Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Okay, so we already know that Krispy Kreme isn't a health-food product, but even eaten as a treat they're a bit extreme.

The Krispy Kreme company ships cartons of doughnuts, doughnut holes, and honey buns to supermarkets each day. Inside is a collection of sugar-coated white flour that has been fried in vegetable shortening made with partially hydrogenated oil. What does some of the damage amount to?

The Original Glazed Doughnut has 3 grams of saturated fat plus 3-1/2 grams of trans fat.
The Chocolate Iced Kreme Filled Doughnut has 5 grams of saturated fat plus 5 grams of trans fat.
The 310-calorie Honey Bun packs 5 grams of saturated fat plus 7 grams of trans.
The American Heart Association recommends that you eat less than 2 grams of trans fat in an entire day.

Krispy Kreme does say they plan to get rid of the trans fat in their goodies but their new pastries, which have recently started showing up in some areas, mostly replace the trans fat with saturated fat. Not good.

PureCanadian Good post. Ok so I heard about Krispy Kreme doughnuts, so when Krispy Kreme came to Canada ( a few years ago), I had to check it out to see what the big deal was. I bought one and couldn't finish it. It felt like it was made of nothing, yet it sat in my tummy like a ton of bricks! I can't understand why they are so popular....

jillybean Thanks for sending me the link : ) I actually have tried them before and they are pretty good for only 100 calories.

MleighS84 check out glennys.com - they have really good 100 calorie brownies (in a variety of flavors) 7g fiber, 4g protein - 75% organic - great alternative to a regualr brownie, really hits the spot when craving something sweet!!

shellyn Luckily they aren't available here. I've had them in Denver though....they are so light I could eat a dozen and feel like I ate nothing. Protein at least helps me feel full....so I'd much rather do that=)

Carina I haven't had a Krispy Kreme since I was pregnant (and my son is now 6). But wow, they would practically melt in your mouth and it was really hard to eat just one. I kept telling the vendors (that's the hardest part about working in an office!) who brought them in that I was eating for two! I think I wolfed down 4 once. Yikes, thank goodness I don't eat like that anymore. I still find it hard to turn down chocolate cake with chocolate frosting!

jillybean Haha for me it's brownies all the way! But summer is fast approaching so there should be none of this ice cream business people!

ozipherus I'm not a fan of them at all... I tried one once and it turned me off then and there. Ice cream on the other hand, I will never give up on!
ozipherus on 5/15/2008 in response to jillybean Respond

jillybean Yea, I have heard some stories about the taste of those doughnuts. I've never actually tasted one though. I'm afraid if I ever do, I won't be able to stop!
jillybean on 5/15/2008 in response to ozipherus Respond

ozipherus Not sure if its true or not, but I heard that a krispy kreme regular doughnut has the same fat and calorie content as 2 big macs...
Great post... I know people who devour these thinking since they are so light that they can't possibly be bad...lol
