Decipher between what are nutrition truths and food fallacies.

Lay off the carbs. Take vitamins. Avoid eating eggs. We’ve heard these pieces of nutritional advice for years, but are they accurate?
Not necessarily, say exercise physiologists Wendy Repovich and Janet Peterson, who provide their top 10 “nutrition myths.” You'll find the “M” word – moderation – crops up often.
1. Eating carbohydrates makes you fat.Cutting carbs from your diet may result in short-term weight loss, but it’s from a loss of water. Eating carbs in moderation may not directly lead to weight gain. The body uses carbs for energy, and going too long without them can cause lethargy.
2. Drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Repovich and Peterson recommend replacing water lost through breathing, excrement and sweating each day, ... read more

Knees

As a college athlete, staying healthy is key in performance. However, years of wear and tear can lead to unexpected injury. My right knee has decided to give me hassle these past years. Two years ago, it started bothering me a lot. Every time I would go into my squat to catch there would be an ungodly crack and I could feel things rubbing inside. After games I could barely walk on it. Instead of being responsible and deaming it an injury I decided to just grit the pain. I was popping pain killers like crazy just to make it through games and following games icing and taking more pain killers. After a season of pain I decided to mention to the trainer what was going on. I was taken to a knee specialist, who decided that I did not need surgery and gave me a sheet of exercises to do to strengthen the muscles around my knee. Basically what had happened was my knee cap had started turning causing tracking problems because the muscles surrounding my knee were weak. For the next season I did t... read more

Sex Education

Sex Education;the dreaded topic of high school classrooms across the country. You surely remember it. The feeble old nurse came in and told you that sex was of the devil, thinking about sex would make babies, babies are bad and therefore you are going to hell. In the hour or so time block, she mentioned the words penis and vagina which made everyone laugh, and nothing was really accomplished except that the homework you didn't do for history wasn't going to be collected because of the presentation. The problem is, the education part. No one really learned anything.
The current problem that schools are facing and have faced is, what is the role or better yet responsibility of the education system to teach this information? Should sex education be taught at all? If it is taught, what should the class cover? My personal belief is that sex education needs to be taught. If a student decides to make a bad decision in regards to safe sex, then the fault is on the student. At no p... read more

Women and Hormones

Women are many times labeled as hormonal, which most of the time can not really be argued with. But then again you really can't blame women, because they were created to be hormonal beings. In fact, I believe that men could not handle child bearing, and that's why it is the womans role. Think about it guys...how much would you freak out if each month you had to deal with a period? I'm going to go out on a limb and say most men could not handle it. But that's really not what I am writing about at this point. What I am suggesting is that while women are hormonal beings, their environment and diet contribute greatly to the control of them. Let me start with meat. I was listening to a radio program called "Duke and the Doctor" a few years ago. On this particular day, they were discussing how meat can affect hormonal balance. It does makes sense. Think about how large companies need their product to be big...and not just big on it's own time...fast. There are all sorts of injections and fee... read more

Beef With Oprah

Oh Oprah. Where do I even start? Let's begin with her current endorsement of the berry diet. Thank you Oprah for promoting a scam and a fad diet. Thank you for single handedly misleading a large group of people into believing in such a "diet." Oprah is indeed my role model in fitness. Clearly, she has a good idea of what a healthy lifestyle looks like. I mean she takes off weight, puts it back on, takes it back off, puts it back on. Meanwhile she promotes all sorts of diets that clearly do the trick every time. She really seems to know what discipline and dedication are all about.
Now for the serious part. I am fed up with people such as Oprah being the spokesperson for various diets. The reason being, she clearly does not understand what being healthy entails. Losing weight is hard. Losing weight the correct way is harder still. Maintaining a healthy weight is challenging too. The problem with Oprah is, by taking weight off and gaining it back again, she is straining her... read more
