Waste of time and money
cardio, personal opinion, journal, weight loss

As a few of you may know, I have been trying the Hip Hop Abs for a few days now. I have come to my conclussion... it is not a useful program.
Here are my issues with Hip Hop Abs;
1) It is very hard to follow what he is doing. There is no explanation to the moves, so you have no clue if you are doing them correctly or not.
2) When you get the DVDs, there is a basic meal guide you should follow. Anybody following that meal plan, even without exercising will lose weight. If you take all red meat, dairy and sugars away, of course you will lose weight quickly, especially in the 1st week.
3) The music is not as great as it seems on the infomercial. Everybody talks about how the music kept them motivated and whatnot... it did nothing for me.
This is not a horrible plan, and may help some people. I am very athletic, I am very active. I would rather be in the gym than at home following a guy that is hard to follow.
My personal opinion is this is just another gimmick and is a waste of time and money. I sincerely hope many people try this and disagree with me. I really hope it helps millions of other people trying to get in shape. I, however, will be giving these to a friend, and will never try them again.
I believe that if it were more descriptive toi what we should be doing, how to be doing it, and where we should be feeling it, I may have given it more time. I followed 2 different workouts 4 times each... so far, not impressed... sorry BeachBody, but I will not be ordering anything else from you.

Cause for concern?
jogging, pain, help wanted, cardio, journal
|
Here is the deal... like many north americans, I do not like jogging. I do jog, and quite often, but I would rather do something else.
When I do my cardio at the gym it usually involves the stairmaster, stationary bike, eliptical and then some laps around the track, and on occassion some wind sprints.
Yesterday morning I woke up and when directly to the gym. It was a great back workout, and I decided instead of the normal cardio I do, I will hop on a treadmill and enjoy 20 to 25 minutes of music in my MP3 player.
Here is where the concern started. After a mere 45 seconds, I felt a sharp intense pain on my right side, exactly half way between my armpit and my hip. I rested for 15 seconds and it went away. I stretched and started jogging again, and wham... it came back.
I decided to go back to my regular routine and I had no problem whatsoever.
Later on in the day yesterday I went for a beautiful walk, which I will discuss in another blog, and when I got home decided to try jogging again... guess what... I couldn't.
This pain is only present during jogging... any clues as to what it may be???

New routine day 1
biceps, muscle building, cardio, fitness training
|
So I modified my weight lifting to increase weights, exercises and intensity.
Last night I worked my biceps and shoulders. It was a super fun workout, and I lifted heavier than I have before, and spent more time on the weights than usual. Yes, I am a bit sore today, but I know my limits and I am not going overboard. I am pushing myslef to see some solid gains, but I am careful too.
After the weightlifting, I did my usual 60 minutes of cardio, but instead of switching around alot, I spent more time on each machine, and at a higher intensity level. I really need to improve my endurance.
I am looking forward to tonight when I work my legs and lower back.
The fun part is I am now training with a good friend of mine who finally realized that he needs to lose weight. He was always in better shape than I was, but that has changed.
I look forward to helping him attain his weight loss goals, and look forward to him helping me increase my cardio endurance and my new weight lifting goals.
It is amazing how much a training partner can mean to a workout!

Gatorade or Powerade
energy drinks, personal opinion, cardio, calories
|
I must confess... I like Gatorade. As mentioned in a previous blog, I do drink Propel before some of my workouts. I find it really makes a difference.
I usually enjoy a nice protein shake with fresh fruits after my workout, but on days where I do only cardio, I treat myself to a Gatorade (I really like the grape flavor).
Last night was one of those 95% cardio nights, and it was quite a good workout. I left the gym and went to the store across the street to buy my gatorade... BUT THEY WERE SOLD OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I went and picked up a Powerade.
I must say they taste almost identical. I am sure if it were a blind test, that I would have no clue which was which. However, I did notice that Powerade has less calories and less grams of sugar.
I am curious to know what other people prefer and their thoughts and opinions of these or other similar drinks.
I also noticed that Powerade has a 'Powerade Option" which is a calorie reduced version of their brand. Does Gatorade have something similar?

Happy I went
cardio, fitness training, personal opinion
|
So here is the deal. Yesterday I woke up feeling horrible. I went to work because I was scheduled to go on a short 1 day business trip, so I went. I did not go to the gym though.
Today I took the day to recover, and started feeling a little better in the afternoon. I decided tonight after supper that I was going to go do a short cardio workout at the gym.
I went and managed to do 14 minutes on a high level on the eliptical, then did 10 high intensity minutes on the stairmaster, and then 10 fast paced minutes on the bike.
I was low on energy but wanted to get through my workout.
What I did tonight is about 70% of what I usually do... but in my mind, better to do this than nothing.
As the title states, I am very happy I got my workout in today.
