Sometimes cheating is good
Tags: eating habits, diet, cravings, proper eating, personal opinion

Sometimes cheating is good Cheating is school is wrong.  Cheating on a loved one is not recommended.  Every now and then, cheating on your diet is necessary.

I do not like Oprah, and Dr Phil is ok, but I can live without him.  The one thing I have heard both of them say is that if you are making a life change in the way you eat, and you are seriously craving a donut, go have it.  Just don't do it often.

In this month's Muscle & Fitness magazine there is an article about just that.  When is it ok to cheat, and with what...

In my own experience, I find this to be the best answer;

When I am seriously craving pizza, I go have 1 slice.  Otherwise I will try to replace that with healthy foods, but in the end, I will eat more... I will nibble on carrots, then a yogurt, maybe a protein bar, then some milk and who knows what.  I would be consuming less calories with 1 slice of pizza.

I also find that if you do not eat unhealthy foods, when you do indulge, they tatse all that much better.  Ice cream once a week is good.  When you allow yourself ice cream once every month, it tatses all that much better!

I know many people who set aside either a cheat meal per week, and some even a cheat day every 2 weeks.  For me, I enjoy knowing that I eat healthy.  When I do crave the rare item, I enjoy it.  I know that I burn enough calories to make it not count, and I enjoy them so rarely that when I do cheat, it tastes all that much better.

There is no point in denying yourself something that you want.  Just make sure it is not too often, and when you do crave it, have a moderate amount.

True benefits of a workout partner
Tags: personal opinion, proper eating, workout friends, gym

I always enjoy working out with other people.  I enjoy spotting other people, and I really love getting new tips and advise from people.  I am very open minded to new ideas when it comes to fitness and nutrition.

Growing up I had a friend who was always in better shape than I was.  He did martial arts.  He played tennis, basketball, and soccer.  He played sports during our high school lunch break.  We went biking together, and he was one of the 1st rollerbladers I knew.

Needless to say, he os no longer in good shape... in fact he is 30 pounds overweight and it is all hanging off his belly.  He looks about 7 or 8 months pregnant.

We started training together.  I set him up with a healthy diet plan, and a very intense mostly cardio routine.  He is following the cardio routine, tries had with the weights, and although his eating habits are not the best, they are MUCH better than they were.

I realize now that there is no greater asset than a true workout partner.  Somebody who you can motivate and guide, and somebody that does the same for you.  I trust him and feel comfortable when he is spotting me.  I know he appreciates my advise, and I take his as well.

In 3 weeks working together, although he does only cardio by himself 2 days a week at another gym, both of us have been able to increase intensity in our workouts.  With his help I am lifting more and doing more cardio.  With my help, he is running longer and at a steadier pace.

No matter what your goals are, a good workout buddy is irreplaceable!

Not eating right
Tags: proper eating, nutrition, eating habits, calories

OK, so I have been crazy busy at work lately... I had no idea my office could hold so many papers.

I have been so rushed and stressed to get everything done that yesterday I did not eat my lunch or meal #4.  Once I did eat it was way later than usual.

Today I also missed out on lunch, but once this blog is done I am going to have a nice salmon salad.  Ummm... I am getting hungry thinking about it.

I know that I need to eat, and I am the type of person who never really stops eating.  I enjoy food, especially healthy spicy food.  I need to remember to stick to my own advise and eat well, and every 3 to 4 hours.

Does anybody else have times where they are so busy that they just don't eat.  I know it is bad, after all, we all need X amount of calories per day... and they should be divided well.

Hopefully this pile of papers goes away, and my good eating habits return.

Kids and summer eating
Tags: children, diet, nutrition, proper eating

Well summer will be here very soon.  School will be out and kids will be having fun at camp, daycamp, and many at home with their families.

I personally love the fact that my older son will be in day camp.  He will have the opportunity to swin and go to the park everyday.  Add that to some arts & crafts, playing tennis outdoors and learning to play basketball and I am sure lots of dodgeball, and it equals a great time.

I know that I will be packaging him healthy lunches.  Fruits and veggies, healthy sandwiches and sugar free juices.

What really gets on my nerves are people who give kids pure junk simply because they are playing outside.  They justify it by saying "well, they are running around in the yard".  YES, they do want and deserve popsicles, ice cream and occassional treats.  That does NOT mean feed them only crap and junk and hope they run it off.  It is not healthy for them, and worse, it teaches them horrible eating habits and teaches them to not worry about eating right.

My idea of a great sunny day at the park includes ice cream, for sure.  But it doesn't include chocolate bars, gummy bears, popsicles and other junk.  What is wrong with watermelon, strawberries, frozen yogurt and water???  I grew up that way and I think I turned out ok.  I want my kids to grow up healthy and knowing when to have junk and how much.

I am usually the first to go and buy sugar free freezies for the kids.  I make sure they always have water and juice to drink.  I also enjoy cutting fruits for them to nibble on.  Why is it that so many people figure because they are kids they can eat anything.  Does the obesity amongst children all over north america not prove that that theory does not work?

Is it just me, or are kids not being taught proper eating habits when it is so easy to teach if you stick with a healthy diet.&#...

Milk... my enemy/my friend
Tags: children, diet, nutrition, soy milk, proper eating

We all know milk is good for you.  There is no doubt in my mind about that.  However, I do not like the taste of milk, never really have.
I make it a point to buy 1% milk with added Omega-3 for the kids, and they also get vanilla and chocolate soy milk.  I drink 1 glass of soy milk each day.
I am unsure if there are benefits to soy milk.  I was told that soy milk has less fat and more protein, but I am yet to get that as an accurate fact.
Does anybody know if this is true?
How many glasses is really a "great" amount to drink per day?
I would love any opinions, advise, and of course facts about milk.
Thank you.

The Subway "Myth"
Tags: diet, nutrition, weight loss, proper eating, personal opinion

The Subway "Myth" We have all seen Jared and how much weight he has lost and kept off.  And good for him fo rdoing it and keeping a healthy lifestyle.  His food choices led him to not only lose weight and feel great but it also led to him becoming an unknown spokesperson for one of the world's biggets fast food franchises and made him a millionaire.
We see ads for Subway on shows like The Biggest Loser, they advertise in Muscle & Fitness.  Subways is owned by a company called Doctor's and Associates.  They have well over 21000 locations in North America.  They are for sure healthier than some of the alternatives.  But here is the catch... you have to choose wisely.
I recently went to lunch with my sister and we decided to have Subway.  It was close buy, and I like that I get to "design" my meal.
She ordered a 6 inch turkey sub, on white bread with herbs and cheese, added extra cheddar to the sub, and then had it drowining in subway sauce.
My order was 6 inch turkey on whole wheat, no cheese, with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and hot peppers.  No salt and pepper, no sauce.  I am no expert, but I am 110% positive, although we both had turkey, my sub was way lower in calories, and had the same amount of nutrients and protein.
Here are some tricks I try to stick with.  Always have whole wheat.  Stick with 6 inch subs, they are generally enough, especially if you eat every 3 hours or so.
Stay away from the regular mayo and subway sauce... they do have a great chipotle sauce and a low fat mayo.  Stick to turkey, or grilled chicken, some of the other stuff is too fatty, and thier tuna is more mayo with tuna in it, than tuna with mayo in it.
Subway is a great choice for a meal on the go, but it is not necessarily always the healthiest.  Keeping it healthy is very easy, but you have to know that.   Their steak and cheese sub with extra cheese bacon and mayo is no better tha...
