I really need to listen to myself once in a while
Tags: dehydration, heat exhaustion, humidity

I'm so good at reminding everyone else to pay attention to the cues their body is sending out, but I was guilty of ignoring mine last night. Temperatures have been in the 90s where I live, though humidity isn't much of a factor, so I've been waiting to run until later in the evening. Last night it was still in the 80s and clouding up, so the humidity was rising rapidly. Guess who went running without carrying a water bottle?! Stupid me! I got about 3 miles out and I was feeling so sluggish and my mouth was beyond parched, and I stopped dead in my tracks, feeling like I couldn't push on. Lucky for me it's a route I run regularly. A woman who lives across the street from where I was standing came out and brought me a water bottle. She told me she sees me breeze past on my runs all the time and could tell I was "in trouble." She' d never seen me just stop like that. Before I'd reached the point of heat exhaustion I was rescued by a good samaritan - this time. But what if I'd been on the trail or running a different route or.....too many possible scenarios, none of them good. Next time I'm taking my own water, staying hydrated. I hope you're all doing everything YOU can to workout SAFELY in the heat!

runningbear It's normally dry where I live, but with a storm brewing the humidity rose quickly. My body simply isn't accustomed to it. I've changed my routine to run in the early morning on days when I don't swim, before the heat of the day makes it unsafe to exercise.

boazoz Very early in Army service they teach you to ration your water and be careful not to run out of it. I am happy to hear that a friendly lady offered help. One must be careful, although I too have been running in 35+ with 90% humidity and often do not bring my hydration pack. Tel Aviv offers great running, but little place to stop for a restful drink.

runningbear I don't, but it hasn't been that hot, and I was completely unprepared. I actually just carry a bottle on the rare occasions when the weather warrants it. They actually make a device that you can strap to your body and just sip; it's what I'd consider state-of-the-art equipment for biathletes.

Carina BTW, do you wear one of those belts that hold water bottles? If you do, do they get in the way of your running? I was thinking of getting one.
Carina on 7/2/2008

Carina Wow, runningbear, thank goodness for that woman and thank goodness you're ok. I'm really glad that you posted this blog because as a fairly new runner, I may not be thinking of situations like this. It's different when I'm riding my bike because I have multiple water bottle holders and a big bag in back to carry whatever necessities I need to bring with me. On foot, it's a different story.
