What a rush!!
12k, friendship, community

Many of my fitster friends know I did a 12K yesterday. It was a truly amazing run. While it was my 13th time doing this particular event (notice I said doing, not running), this year was different; I trained hard and ran almost the entire thing. The other thing that made this run special was having a running partner - a friend I'd known YEARS ago but lost contact with until a few months ago. I could have easily run the entire course; in fact I finished with little effort and no soreness today. But this year wasn't about time. It was about sharing something special with someone who'd never experienced it before. My friend drove 300 miles to do this run with me. WOW! So while my friend didn't have the time to train that I did because of work and travel issues and kept apologizing to me for "holding me back," why on earth would I want to run ahead, finish alone maybe 10 minutes sooner, when I could just have fun running with a friend.
It was the warmest starting temp in the event's 31 year history, 51 degrees. By the time we reached the finish line, the sun was bright and warm - a perfectly glorious day.
Our city is on the smallish side - 200,000 - and while that may not seem impressive, I can attest to the fact that our city turns out in full force for community events like Bloomsday and Hoopfest. People who don't run the race volunteer at water stations, man registration tables at the tradeshow, or just stand on the sidelines cheering on the runners. There are garage bands all along the race course, kids with garden hoses happy to cool you off (whether you want them to or not ; ) ), choirs singing from the front steps of their church, nuns from the convent along the race course clapping and cheering, children with koolaid and popsicle stands....you get the picture. Ours is the biggest small town you'd ever want to visit. And this Bloomsday is one I will NEVER forget!... read entire entry
