Alli by GlaxoSmithKline: Great Marketing Scam, Terrible Supplement

Alli by GlaxoSmithKline: Great Marketing Scam, Terrible Supplement Alli is one of the most popular over-the-counter weight loss supplements of the year. Developed by GlaxoSmithKline, it is well known that the weight loss supplement is FDA approved. Some of you may have read my recent post about the negative side effects of alli, here I discuss the marketing aspect.

Alli consists mostly of orlistat, which in high doses, is only available by prescription. Orlistat stops the absorption of fats, which can aid in weight loss.

If it’s FDA approved, it has to be the answer… right?

Not necessarily. The only thing that is certain is that GlaxoSmithKline threw out a lot of money to get both the FDA approval – and spent a lot more money getting the word of it’s FDA approved status out to the public.

Just because the FDA approved that orlistat can assist weight loss does not mean that they support all of the Alli weight loss claims. Furthermore, Alli is not the first supplement to have the FDA approval. Other supplements, such as OatVantage, VitaBlue, and Marinol Fish Oil Omega 3 have also been approved.

The FDA Approval was a Marketing gimmick

I purposely waited a while to look into the Alli supplement and how it works. Now that people using Alli have had adequate time to see results, I haven’t noticed less overweight people in the world. I haven’t heard any success stories, and while the hype is still somewhat burning – the hope died out a while ago.

Success stories from Alli users (haven’t heard any) have been drastically overshadowed by horror stories due to Alli’s side effects. If you’re still considering a trial of this supplement, I suggest reading more.

Mitch Great points crista, and ryan... Alli is the biggest joke ever. I knew a friend who took it and they concurred that there are bad side effects.

crista If you have noticed Alli only allows you to eat so much fat, if you eat more than ur allotted amount it causes you to poop your pants-btw that’s gross- It basically forces you to eat better and if you don’t eat well it purges the rest out of ur body. This is a horrible solution, for many reasons. One, some ppl will still eat whatever they want knowing the body will get rid of what they can’t utilize. Two, if you do eat more than you should, not only will ur body purge what it doesn’t need but it also will get rid of the essential vitamins and minerals you do did. Finally, what I feel to be a deal breaker- for me anyway-, it causes you to poop your pants, now who in their right minds would agree to take this with this side effect?? Now like I said at first it causes you to eat less fat and less over all less calories- or u get sick. Now for the common public here’s an idea- how about you just eat less fat and less over all calories…hey then you don’t need a drug!!!

Again Ryan good post, sorry I went on a tangent about this, but weight loss drug sooo bother me.

ryan oh wow I didn't know about the tax credit... tricky.

OzzieOcean With the hundreds of millions they spend it better be good marketing. Lets not forget they get a tax credit for the development, it goes as a tax benefit towards research and development.

ryan thanks oz. I give gsk credit though, it was a great marketing scheme
ryan on 6/11/2008 in response to OzzieOcean

OzzieOcean That picture is way too funny. FDA approval just means that the drug's testing reached a certain viability point... it does not have to offer 100% proof that it works. Awesome post!
