Fitness Advertising on Facebook

Fitness Advertising on Facebook Health and Fitness advertisements are swamping the left column of my facebook page/browser/whatever you want to call it. What if I feel like seeing a non-fitness advertisement every once and a while?

Facebook's Advertising system allows advertisers to target you based on age, sex, region, and the biggy - keywords. Since I am obsessed with fitness, and I'm always fitness networking, my left column is always some picture of a ripped stomach and telling me that I can get 6-pack abs in 5 minutes.

It's kind of crazy how my initial interest in fitness makes me a target for NOTHING BUT fitness. With all of these targeted advertisement marketing engines that are being utilized by facebook and google, will we ever be exposed to something new? I admit, I'm big time into fitness and every once and a while I see a neat ad that I'm suckered into clicking - but eventually I get really sick of being told I should be on this new fad diet.

Is it just me, or does everyone else get mostly fitness advertisements as well?

Penguins on Facebook Also, I have "penguins" listed as one of my interests on facebook... I thought it was funny when I got an "Adopt a Penguin ad" - gotta love targeted advertisements.

I named him Pablo.

kettlebell27 I get things from three categories: fitness, online dating, & Catholic stuff. And yes, even online dating for Catholics. We are all just a bunch of bullseye targets on the web... :)

Carina Ok, here's what I got....
"Above Ground Pool Sale... save up to 50% on a new above ground pool. We offer 100% financing."
Guess what? I can't swim!!!! :)

Carina You know what everybody? I knew those ads were there but I've always ignored them. Now I'm curious to see what shows up on mine!

ryan Well see, I have an interest in fitness, so if tons of things I'm not interested in showed up and then all of a sudden a fitness ad showed up, I'd be like oh wow I'm into fitness, what is that? But instead, they're all fitness so I tune them out.

JimB Hmmm ... I'm very adept at tuning out ads, whether they be on websites, TV or even (don't tell my publisher!) newspapers. So I had to call up my Facebook page and see what came up there. Renaissance man that I am, the activities and interests I've listed on my page include, believe it or not, yoga and genealogy. I just found ads for a genealogy website and one for meditation! They would have just been part of the wallpaper if you hadn't called my attention to this.

ryan Haha, will do.

ryan Haha thanks... Oz, when you see competitor's ads on facebook you always have to click them.. Costs them anywhere from 15 - 80 cents (maybe more). Haha.
ryan on 6/12/2008 in response to OzzieOcean

ryan Exactly... I do have a life outside of fitness.

OldeButGoode Ask Pablo to send us some "cool" weather ! Thanks !!
OldeButGoode on 6/12/2008

OzzieOcean I get fitness and tanning/skin care ads... the 1 thing I need the least in the world is seeing ads from my competition on facebook. BTW... Love the penguin... thats too funny! lol!
OzzieOcean on 6/12/2008

MleighS84 interesting - i did notice that my left column was full of fitness stuff, never put it together that it was targeted advertising - i agree targeted advertising is ridiculous i have other interests too, like drinking and traveling oh and i like FOOD alot!! ha ha
