Super Busy This Week - Advice on how to find time to workout? Since I'm swamped with "stuff" to do this week, I haven't had much time to workout, and sadly I haven't had much time to get on here either.

So I'm cheating with this blog and instead of offering advice, I'm asking for it...

What do you do to still fit in the workouts when you're busy as hell?

ryan Great advice... Definitely good to get it out of the way, then there's no chance of skipping it later on.

PureCanadian If I know my day will be crazy, I will plan to get up earlier and hit the gym before it begins. That way, I feel more in control of my day, knowing I've taken care of myself first.

OldeButGoode Once in a while, but generally not a problem. I do some pretty intensive super sets, negatives and descending (stripping) weights that can really take it out of you.
OldeButGoode on 6/25/2008 in response to ryan

davegleason If it seems like you can get through no problem...add a bit of weight. But believe me with a 10 or 15 pound db or mb it will crush most of us...it does me anyway! Thanks!

ryan With the brainstorming and idea thinking during workouts, that works great. I usually find it helpful to think about best way of doing workouts, while actually working out.

ryan Just saw that 'quick but killer workout' you posted... Looks good.

ryan Do you find yourself getting tired by the end of the day when you do morning workouts?
ryan on 6/25/2008 in response to OldeButGoode

ryan You definitely win the award for the most time efficient workouts

ryan Thanks Carina, I have to give all the credit to everyone for their responses though.

ryan Saw your jumping rope blog... Nice post!
ryan on 6/25/2008 in response to JimB

JimB Now that I've picked up on jumping rope, I've added that to my lunchtime quickie workouts. The rope is light and easily stashed in a briefcase or backpack.

JimB Hey, I often see people running while pushing a baby stroller. Doing it with a lawnmower isn't that much of a stretch.
JimB on 6/24/2008 in response to crista

crista so feel free to laugh at this one cause i know how silly i looking doing it... but, since it's summer time and i get busy too and I need to cut my grass, I walk behind it doing lunges and squats. Then I'll do a row of semi sprints w/ the mower. Its a great workout and I get tons of drive-by laughs. :)

Carina This was a great blog, Ryan. It's so interesting to read everybody's responses, too. I have weeks like this all the time so in order for me to get everything done, I have to maintain a daily "to-do" list. This list almost always has "workout!" written on it. I may not always have one hour available to workout so sometimes, I'll break it up into a few 10-minute workouts throughout the day. Whatever it takes to do something, right? There are times, too, where I have the time but I'm not in the right place. That's when I have to be very creative! For example, there was one time where my son was hospitalized for 8 days. They were doing construction outside the hospital so I didn't feel like running outside and inhaling all the dirt. Besides, I didn't have my running shoes with me. I ended up doing bicep curls with cans of formula and tricep presses off the hospital couch. I didn't get to do my cardio but I got to do something and that made me feel better. Whatever it takes, I guess!

kettlebell27 I'm a 10 minutes-or-less workout freak: either a hard, brief interval run, or a quick kettlebell Swing, Snatch, & Windmill workout. Warm up with Swings, do some snatches as you wish, finish off the core with Windmills. On weeks where I am physically drained after a series of long work days, even getting 1-2 quick KB workouts a week will at least keep me maintained.

OldeButGoode I always work out mornings before work. I found its too easy to get side tracked any other time. I will however " look " for any additional workout during the day - park my car far from the door I'm going into, walk up the stairs rather than the elevator, purposely make several trips to the copy machine rather than one, etc.

JimB A couple of ways I've been able to sneak in a short workout:
When the weather's decent, at lunchtime I go out on the top deck of our parking garage and get in a few minutes of exercise. I do a few of my yoga exercises to warm up. There are picnic tables up there, so I do a couple sets of decline pushups with my feet up on the bench...a quick but intense exercise. And of course, just briskly walking up and down the four flights of stairs to the top level gives me a little extra cardio.
Also, is it possible for you to take public transit to work? If so, the walk to and from the station is a painless way to get some exercise. If the train or bus ride takes longer than driving, you can get work done while riding (I'm guessing you must have a laptop!) And you'll be saving on gas as a bonus!

davegleason 10 minute workouts Ryan. Try it...you won't believe how hard it is. Try the workout I posted on this FC. I went from barely getting in a workout a week to 5-6 per week. You can get up earlier but you still need balance. Great post and I hope more people comment and discuss.

plucky Well, ryan, same story here... Lately, I've been busy with business travel and the todo list filling up at the office while I'm gone. Although I haven't been active on this site as a result, I'm still finding time to keep the workouts regular. For me (and Miranda according to her comments below) it's a simple matter of "carving" out the time. I choose that word explicitly, because you literally have to carve out that time from other seemingly important tasks. One thing I've taken on as one of my philosophies of being "fit for life" is that if you don't make the time for yourself, nobody else will. Just put something else on the back burner and go get the workout in. Schedule things around the workout and block the gym time off on the calendar. Chances are, you'll become even more productive as you'll have more energy to attack all those other nagging priorites. I also find that I have some of my best ideas and brainstorming while I'm pushing myself to my physical limits.

MleighS84 i actually switched my gym time from evenings to mornings - now i wake up by 3:45am to be at the gym by 5am (half an hour commute) - sometimes it is near impossible for me to get a good workout in after a long day at the office - its actually not that bad its pretty neat to know by 9am i have been awake for 5 hours and got a good solid workout in - you would think i would be tired but i actually have more energy when i work out in the morning throughout the day instead of going to the gym after work (which some days isnt til about 8-9pm). My workouts dont suffer either even though i am tired b/c once i get warmed up i am ready to go - the hardest part is getting out of bed but once your up its not so bad :)
