Treadmill or Running Outside: Which is Better for your Fitness Needs? During the winter months, it was all treadmill for most of us, but now that it's getting warmer, do we move our running outside?

It's important to break down the advantages and disadvantages of both running on a treadmill and getting outdoors and running or jogging outside.

Advantages of Running on a Treadmill over Running Outside:
1. Running on a treadmill is easier on the joints and less likely to cause shin splints.
2. The gym atmosphere will almost always have people, which is good if you're into social fitness.
3. Running on a treadmill makes it easier to track how many miles you've ran, and how many calories you've burned.
4. Running on a treadmill allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you're running.
5. Un-affected by weather.
6. Ability to control incline, decline, and set a constant pace for your running/walking.

Advantages of Running Outside over Running on a Treadmill:
1. No need for equipment or gym membership (we simply ask that you wear clothes)
2. Avoid waiting for equipment at the gym - some gyms get pretty crowded.
3. Get to soak up some rays - which is good for getting your daily dose of Vitamin D.
4. Better sense of progression due to actually moving rather than staying in place.
5. Usually the outside air is fresher than Gym-Air
6. Running outside in different terrains is often a better workout for your body.
7. No risk of falling on a treadmill.

So what's the Verdict?

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. There is obviously no right or wrong choice. I'm not big on running but if I had a personal preference I would probably run outside rather than on a treadmill - Mainly because I have a problem running straight and find myself getting tripped up on treadmills a lot, which can result in a disaster.

Generally, I do 10 minutes of uphill power walking on a treadmill for warm up before my workouts. However, I plan on eventually shifting to KettleBell's warm up recommendation - getting the blood flowing in your muscles via a rolling stick.

If I were going to the gym strictly to run, I would opt to run outside or on a track. Running on a track helps to avoid joint injuries because it is a better running surface.

LTThomas Sprinting is much better than jogging for burning fat. It's a more high intensity activity. This is why I don't jog for cardio, I do sprints. It also enable you to maintain more muscles in the thighs. If you notice, sprinters are more muscular than distance running. Most distance runners tin to be smaller

ryan Yea... I don't like sprinting on treadmills - high chance of falling a looking like a douche bag. Do you find sprints are better for burning fat than jogging longer distances?

LTThomas I don't jog for cardio, I do sprints. So, I prefer doing sprints outside.

MyFitnessHut It is tough....that's why I run outside in the summer. It wouldn't look good if a trainer wilted and passed out in the heat while training a client. In college, we had two-a-day football practice in the altitude and heat

runningbear I live in eastern WA, where in the summer it isn't uncommon to have week-long stretches of temps over 100. The Seattle Seahawks train here in the summer for exactly that purpose - to build stamina in extreme conditions.

plucky I like your style - I continue to run even when it gets real hot in the summer. It takes twice as much energy to go half the distance (and at a slower pace), but it makes for an excellent workout. Just bring something to stay hydrated and wear a hat (if you're like me and have no built-in protection for the head ;)

ryan 99 degree weather? Sounds good for lying around but rough for training. Gotta train in the conditions they compete in though so that makes sense.

runningbear We had 82 inches of snow this winter; if I waited until it thawed I never would have gotten outdoors. Needless to say, when I finally decided I was sick of treadmill running and bought the cleats I was beyond ready!

MyFitnessHut I prefer running outside because you have to generate all the momentum and fight against gravity and the wind. And, I get quicker results. I train my athletes outside if their sport is played outside. I trained athletes in 99 degree weather yesterday.

ryan Running cleats? Wow that is some serious dedication - The name running bear is definitely a good fit. I have trouble running outside when it's cold out - but I do enjoy running in the rain.

runningbear I get so bored running on a treadmill. I even bought myself some running cleats so that I could continue running outdoors in the ice and snow. When I'm bored I can pull the key on the treadmill, but the other advantage of running outdoors besides the fresh air and change of scenery is that whatever distance I cover to my destination, I have to cover to get home; there's no cheating.
