Harvard's Women Only Gym Hours: Fair or Unfair?

Harvard's Women Only Gym Hours: Fair or Unfair? This story dates back to March, but did anyone else hear about Harvard segregating its gym in order to comply with famale Muslim demands?

Apparently, several months ago, the Harvard Athletic Department reacted to requests from Muslim female students to create a female-only environment so that they may workout while still abiding by their religious rules. They feel uncomfortable wearing workout clothes around men, and therefore, they claim, have missed out on hitting the gym.

The solution... The Quadrangle Recreational Athletic Center has restricted, female-only hours from 8am to 10am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 3pm to 5pm on Mondays.

Ola Aljawhary - a student at Harvard - said the women only gym is a necessity.

"These hours are necessary because there is a segment of the Harvard female population that is not found in gyms, not because they don't want to work out, but because for them working out in a co-ed gym is uncomfortable, awkward or problematic in some way," she told Boston University's Daily Free Press.

My Thoughts:
It's important to respect others' religions - to an extent. The simple fact is that everyone attending Harvard is paying money which goes toward the gym. It's not fair that men are restricted from using it at certain hours. Suppose someone has a religious believe that doors are evil? Would all doors have to be removed during certain hours of the day?

Harvard, and all universities, should put forth a legitimate effort to accommodate everyone's religion - but if religious beliefs restrict you from using a gym which allows both sexes, then maybe a gym which is PUBLIC to all students is not for you.

If the women are that intense about those religious beliefs, then they can join the local Curves near Harvard.

What does everyone else think?

onestrongman My wife attended Harvard and she is not happy to see such cowardice by the administration. They will say that they are being tolerant but you can bet they would not do this for any other religion.

I frequently see muslim women swimming at our local pool, completely covered except for their face. Thus far they have not asked me of my family to cover up or leave the pool. I'll fight them on that if they do.

MleighS84 I think that Harvard is doing the right thing by accomadating - there are other gyms on campus so there is a place for the guys to work out during those times ( like Jules said too, I have been there and there are other options)- if you think about it universities close off gyms for different uses all the time such as designated times for athletes/certain sports - what makes this situation different? why do atheletes get alone time in the gym but the ladies cant?

jules I think the idea of Curves certainly is a more reasonable option, but at the same time, included in tuition is the cost of using the schools facilities, so I can understand the perspective that these women can't opt out of the built in cost of access to Harvard's rec. facilities that they don't feel comfortable using for religious reasons. Also, there are, i believe, 3 other gyms on Harvard's campus and all the residential houses have their own workout facilities. That being said, I think you can make a good argument against this policy, and It would be interesting to see to what extent this really effects the majority of students.

OzzieOcean There are plenty of gyms that are funded and run by many religious organizations, and if they decide to have seperate hours, so be it, but at a private university that YOU CHOOSE to attend, the gym should have 2 sets of hours, open and closed. Ryan, I agree with you 110%!
OzzieOcean on 6/25/2008

ryan I'm glad everyone agrees. I just think it's really dumb because I know there are guys out there who feel uncomfortable working out around girls at times. And I think religions go overboard a lot of times.

crista I agree, there has to be a curves around.. or possibly Harvard could allow the women to use the GE room when no classes r in there and close the doors or curtains. I think that rules is ridiculous as well. I do understand there need for privacy, but not at the the expense of others.

OldeButGoode Unfortunately this is only the beginning !!! If a proclaimed witch says she will only attend class at midnight then what ?? !! Sounds strange but we are loosing our " TRADITIONAL" values .

Carina What an interesting story... I do have to say that I think it is unfair and actually sort of ridiculous. If the "women only" gym is such a necessity, then why not hit the local Curves (like you said) or build a separate facility on campus for women only?

JimB I'm sure if they ever scheduled male-only hours the PC police would be down on them in a flash!
